Teachers spend more time with children, but do they as a result of that have more positive influence on the children? It is true that the parents spend lesser time with the children but their influence can not be over emphasized.The parents are more influential than the teachers some say. Oh! The teacher you say, no… yes the parents, someone else says. OK! lets look into it together.

On a neutral ground, a parent will say he influences his/her child more positively than the teachers, while the teachers will believe they teach the children virtually everything including the ones they put in practice at home. Before we continue, let us classify it into two classes which are: positive influence and negative influence. A child skill or character can be influenced. Between these, which is more important and who impacts it in children? Before a child is grown to the age of mixing with his peer, the parents are the teacher (fomal and infomal education) in all areas.

One of the questions that plagues the parents is how they can raise good children. This question has been in their mind even before the children are born. Although everyone’s child can’t be above average, everyone wants his/her kids to be nice to others, to “get along” in the world. But kids are not ready to cooperate. But at the age they are still learning from their parents only (before they start playing with their group), Parents must assure positive impact.

At adolescence age, when a child decides wether or not to do something, parents are importantly needed to guide the child. Children do things the way they see it, considering only the advantageouse aspect ot it. They only see it not good after they become a victim of the circumnstace. But there are many things they do which do not have immediate effect on them but gradualy ruining their lives, they never knew it is injurious to their lives in the future. Most of these characters are being adopted from the peer group, these may include: smoking, steeling, terrorism, doing of drogs and among others.

The influence of parents on a child can be the most important influence given to a child in life. The reason it is the most important is because the parents should be spending the most time with the child. Parents are accountable to God for how they

influence their children. It helps children identify themselves through the parent’s role modeling. The parent’s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of children. The parent’s influence can help add to better society. Therefore I believe that the influence of parents on a child is very important.

The first reason parents influence is most important is the parents should be spending the most time with the child. They should be nurturing the child from infancy. Quality time is important but quantity is also important. Day by day, hour by hour contact with the parents helps provide a secure atmosphere for the child to grow. Too much running around and dropping kids off at day cares and baby sitters can be disruptive and unsettling to a child. Sometimes it can’t be helped depending on a family’s situation, especially if there is only one parent.

In this challenging situation a single parent needs a lot of support from extended family and friends. Much of the child’s basic personality is developed in the first seven years. Parents have great opportunity to use this time to instill proper values.

Secondly, I believe parents are accountable to God for how they influence the children He gives them. This is a good motivation for setting a good example for your children. They are constantly watching your behavior and responses in all of life’s situations. They soon find out that parents aren’t perfect but they should see a strong desire to do good in showing love and help to others, working hard and being responsible citizens. Also a parent sets the tone for a child’s belief towards God. It has been said that how a child views his earthly father can be correlated to how he believes in God.

If he has a loving, fair, just, and compassionate father who believes in God it will be easier for him to have faith in God. I’m sure a mother could have this same effect too. There are exceptions to this rule because God can take a child out of the most difficult situation and make a wonderful person out of him. This is the exception not the rule, the miracle, the hope God gives to each individual. So parents should want to aid in helping a child’s positive attitude towards God.

The third reason parents influence is important is it helps a child identify himself/herself through the parent’s role modeling. A little boy can see that he has certain things in common with his dad and a girl with her mom. They can see there is a purpose for why they were made different. They learn that there are two different sexes in life with differing strengths and abilities. Men typically are stronger, and more aggressive, while women can have a stronger inner strength, and be more sensitive and intuitive. There are also exceptions to these qualities but they seem to be the norm, or used to be the norm. Personalities differ which can have a bearing on an individuals strengths or abilities. But the role modeling of parents can give a child a basic understanding of his role in life.

Fourthly, the parent’s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of a child. When you consider the emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual side of a child you realize there is a lot to influence. Parents must display emotional stability. They will learn that people have good days and bad days, but they need to see parents being good problem solvers. Socially, they need to see how parents interact with others in working situations, hospitable situations, and charitable situations. I already commented on the spiritual aspect of the parent’s influence, however again I will say parents displaying a belief in a God who is in control of all things will give much confidence to the child. Intellectually, parents can influence the importance of a child using their minds to learn what they can. To show the child that learning can be fun and reaching their potential is a worth while goal.

Lastly, the importance of a parents influence on a child can be recognized by the impact it has on society. Much power is in the hands of the parents in helping the child become a responsible adult in society. So actually when parents have influence on a child they are also influencing society. This shows how great their responsibility is and important. Ultimately a child makes his/ her own decisions in life. A child may have the best parents and make many unwise decisions or the worst parents and make very wise decisions because of individual will. Still the best hope for a child’s outcome is to have good parents to contribute and better society.

In conclusion the influence of parents on a child is very important. When one considers the amount of time they can have with their child and the influence they can have on the child who becomes part of society one can see the awesome responsibility given. Then how do teachers influence children? From a book by Ernest O. Melby,The Teacher and Learning, 1963. It says “A teacher says: “I can accept my good students, those who behave and do good work, but I can’t accept those who do not work, who have the wrong attitude and who cause me trouble.” They forget that it’s the acceptance of all that gives power to the teacher. In fact, it is in relation to students who are difficult that the teacher’s true qualities are demonstrated. We all find it easy to accept those who lend themselves to our designs. It is in their relationship to those who cause them trouble, who are dirty and poorly dressed, and who fail to achieve that teachers prove their beliefs.

It is the essence of the point of view here presented that only a complete gift of oneself makes the teacher an artist. Teaching is a jealous profession; it is not a sideline. This is not only because of the problem of time, nor because of the impact of lesser efforts on pupils: it is because of the effect on the teacher himself. It is only as we give fully of ourselves that we can become our best selves. Thus halfway measures and attitudes of whatever kind reduce our effectiveness.

When we ask the teacher to give himself fully to his students, to his colleagues, to his community, and to humanity, we are thus only asking him to be maximally effective. Moreover, it is only as he gives himself that he can experience completely the joys and satisfactions of being a teacher. In this situation he is in the same position as any artist. Frustrated artists are often those who for one reason or another are unable or unwilling to make a complete gift of themselves to their art. Similarly, the unhappiest teachers are those who bemoan the weaknesses of their pupils and the conditions under which they work and who fail to sense that it is their own half-hearted efforts that defraud them.

One measure of the teacher’s willingness to give of himself is his accessibility to his students, his willingness to spend time with them. One difficulty here is the narrow conception that often prevails about what it means to teach. To teach means more than to lecture or explain before a group of students. The best teachers influence their students more in their personal, individual contacts with them than in strict classroom situations. If teaching and learning are complementary processes, if the teacher is to teach by learning and if his teaching is to be directed toward an individual, he must know that individual. And how is he to know that individual if he spends little or no time with him alone?

Another illusion defeats us. It is that there is some magic in lecturing and in the hearing of recitations. We want as much time for this as possible. We begrudge taking time to work with individual pupils. Yet we know very little about the actual effectiveness of what we do. Is it not at least possible that our classroom work would be greatly increased in effectiveness if only we spent more time with our pupils as individuals? We seem to be obsessed with teaching. We know that no one can educate another person, that all of us must educate ourselves. The teacher’s role is that of a helper in this process. The question is: How can we best help?

According to National-LouisUniversity, Philosophy and History of Education; education serves the needs of two main groups: society and the students.  Society needs education for its proliferation.  To continue to exist and thrive, the society needs schools to educate students who can reason and make enlightened decisions regarding commerce and government. Moreover, society needs schools to assimilate its young citizens into its values and ideologies. The role of teachers is fundamental in marrying the needs of society and the needs of the student.  In many ways, teachers are society ambassadors who are sent to prepare new citizens for their role in society. Teachers need to be a welcoming force that encourages children to “buy-in” to the learning process and value school’s importance in for the future of the individual.  Teachers need to be interpreters who help children understand the world and what society expects of this citizen.  Teachers become change agents who plant the ideology of the society deep with in the soul of the students, and then encourage their students to achieve goals and objectives in pursuit of the dream. How does a teacher prepare a student for a society that is difficult to understand?

Realistically, no teacher will ever meet the needs of everyone all the time.  I advocate that teachers work within the system to teach in a way that they believe will best serve the “public good.”  In other words, teaching should be a decision making process.  Teachers must rely on their reason, their experience, and their morals to best meet the needs of society and students. At thesame time, Parents have a huge responsibility to carry out. Still, parents should help their kids prepare to live, learn, and work in communities that will become even more diverse. Teaching tolerance is important not just because it is part of our American heritage, but because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life.

In short, your child’s success depends on it. Success in today’s world — and tomorrow’s — depends on being able to understand, appreciate, and work with others.
